~ November 30, 2016 workshops with Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas ~
What an amazing day it was. They grab each note and bring out the excitement of the tune. They ignited the Conners Emerson string players!
The evening concert was outstanding. Thirty string players from CES in grades 3-8 performed two tunes led by Alasdair & Natalie in various parts - melody, drones, rthythmic stuff . . . there was no "shlubbing!"
At the end of the concert for the encore, Alasdair invited our students to return for dancing or more fiddling. They had a grand time! Alasdair and Natalie were so gracious to our students.

Inspiration! AKA workshops, concerts, and competitions.......new tunes and choreography learned
from workshops in harp, fiddling, cello fiddling, national and ceilidh dancing and more.
One highlight was meeting and learning from Harper Kim Robertson!
Also, fiddler Alasdair Fraser, cellist Natalie Haas, fiddle group Hillali, were fantastic.

The 5th grade music class students are constructing mountain dulcimers. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Acadia National Park, the students created designs representative of ANP - sunrises, Northern Lights, sea critters, wildlife, waves, wildflowers - and have paint their designs on the dulcimer body.

Safety Last!
(1923. USA. 1hr, 13min. Directed by Harold Lloyd. Rated G)
Harold Lloyd (with Chaplin and Keaton, one of the three comedy giants of silent films) plays a small-town bumpkin trying to make it in the big city, and who finds employment as a lowly department-store clerk. He comes up with a wild publicity stunt to draw attention to the store, resulting in an incredible feat of derring-do on his part that gets him started on the climb to success. Laugh-out-loud funny and jaw-dropping in equal measure, Safety Last! is a movie experience par excellence, featuring the iconic sequence in which Harold hangs off of a clock face on the side of a skyscraper! TEMPO (The Eastern Maine Pops Orchestra for Young Musicians) brings an all-new original score composed by Rebecca Edmondson that will be played live by the youth orchestra in synch with this hi-def, restored silent comedy classic! The orchestra is conducted by Ethan Edmondson, with thirty-five middle school and high school musicians from Central and Downeast Maine (from MDI to Benedicta, Searsport to Sullivan).
TEMPO is non-profit and is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Town Hill VIS.
The Grand Auditorium in Ellsworth is home to TEMPO.

Music Fest Week 2015

posted Jan 13, 2015, 9:10 AM by Rebecca Edmondson   [ updated Jan 14, 2015, 9:06 AM ]

The first week back from break brought the first The Music Fest Week!

Eighteen instructors from MDI and neighboring communities shared talents and expertise with the 7th and 8th graders.

Some of the offerings were cool and African percussion, instrument building, set design & construction, some students even learned to play a new instrument, and more! The creativity was oozing from Conners Emerson students!

The Music Fest Week was indeed very exciting for the students and the staff as well.
It was a delight to witness our current musicians trying other musical avenues and those not currently enrolled in the music program constructing and/or learning an instrument . . . side by side.

Fifth Grade Music Class, Fall, 2014

posted Dec 1, 2014, 8:39 AM by Rebecca Edmondson   [ updated Dec 1, 2014, 8:46 AM ]

The arts have converged in the music room! The 5th grade general music class is learning about American folk music and dance while constructing, decorating, and playing the Appalachian Dulcimers! The students have even strung their personalized dulcimers and are having fun learning to play them in the traditional manner. Thank you to volunteers Rick Barter, Emily Bracale, Kristi Losquadro, Mary & Dean Booher, and Bill Edmondson for lending a hand in various stages with this project. It is truly quite the project and the results are amazing!

Guest Harpist

posted Oct 24, 2014, 8:56 AM by Rebecca Edmondson   [ updated Oct 24, 2014, 9:51 AM ]

The 5th Grade Music Class continues learning about folk and classical string instruments and had the wonderful opportunity to hear guest harpist, Phoebe Durand McDonnell. Phoebe delighted her young audience and answered their many questions. Our students were able to try her 80 lb., 7 pedal concert harp and her smaller Irish harp. She is even lending the small harp to our music program for students to try! The music notation was similar to piano and contained many arpeggios. Phoebe played pieces by Handel, Hindemith, and Irish tunes.

Phoebe Durand McDonnell is an 18 year old harpist from Bar Harbor.  She started playing harp at age 10, and currently studies at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School program on Saturdays in Boston.  She loves playing in orchestra, and has played with five different orchestras in Maine -- Bay Chamber Odeon, University of Maine, Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Maine All-State Orchestra.  In June she recorded for the radio show From The Top, which aired nationally this fall.  Phoebe considers herself a "music theory geek" and is currently rehearsing the harp parts for Mahler's 1st Symphony, the Hindemith Harp Sonata, the Concerto for Harp by Handel, and an etude by J.S. Bach.
